Keeping Pool Afloat
In 2013, 30 employees in Cambridge, U.K., sponsored and participated in a 10K charity fun run, which led to PPD donating approximately $7,673 USD (£4,500) toward the refurbishment of the Great Abington Primary School’s swimming pool. Employees also collected used clothing to be recycled as part of the school fundraising efforts.
Expressing its gratitude, the school invited PPD employees to the opening ceremony as guests of honor. Roger Newbery, vice president of clinical development, and Mike Steege, executive director, HR for EMEA, represented the company.
“On behalf of the pupils, staff, community and governors of Great Abington Primary School, can I say a huge thank you to PPD for your ongoing generosity and support for the school community,” wrote Guy Underwood, head teacher, in an email to PPD. “The pupils have absolutely loved the opportunity to use the outdoor pool and are making remarkable progress with their swimming.”
The swimming pool provides a valuable resource to the school and local community. It enables pupils to learn to swim on site rather than taking lessons in Cambridge, which is 10 miles away.
The school’s parent-teacher association, which helped raise the money necessary for the refurbishment, is now focused on the refurbishment of the school’s library. The organizers from the Cambridge office have planned sponsorship of the 2014 10k race and hope to sign up 40 employees to take part. They are looking for other ways to help with the library fundraising effort, including a book drive.
